To a southerner, Bolton seems like a pretty scary sort of place, especially when you hear the accent, which at first sounds like someone mocking a west country yokel. Once you get used to it and take a proper look at the place however, it’s actually a pretty nice part of the world, and the G casino is no different.
You arrive from the Manchester direction on the spooky A666 – purely spooky because of the number designation, it’s a properly dull road, and when you find the G, it’s another casino that shares a building with a bingo club, like the G casinos in Stockton and Thanet. Getting through reception – which also houses a small arcade in what appears to be a bit of a licencing dodge – you’re onto the floor.
It’s familiar territory indeed, again, and this time it’s massive. There are four separate carousels of Electronic Roulette just in the huge E-gaming area, and another on the main floor, as well as a couple of other areas for electronic roulette. The slots are up to date as you would expect, and at the near end is also the bar, disappointingly without the animated ceiling common to many other G casinos. On this particular day, this bar featured the densest barperson I’ve ever dealt with – a real Johnny no-stars candidate. There’s also a fine looking stage / big screen TV area with plenty of comfy seats and stools if you can bear to take on their live acts. They look to have a murder mystery session coming up – if anyone wants a clue, it turns out the victim was the contents of my wallet, brutally slain – the prime suspect is in fact a “Black Widow” slot game.
Further into the casino are the tables as you might expect, and a huge poker room. As I looked around I also saw a hideous home-bodged table sign telling the world, on a printed bit of A4, about the minimums on one of the side bets, terribly out of place. However, in my mind’s eye I would love to see the marketing manager screaming about this only to be shown one of the nicely printed, brand-faithful promotional posters in the bar referring to the upcoming hypnotist act having them “rolling in the isles”. A surf based hypnotist, perhaps.
This site is on a huge scale, and seemed pretty busy even when I visited late on a Thursday afternoon, suggesting it is thriving. It’s a typical G site, they don’t really make mistakes with these buildings, so whether you’re after table, slots, poker, a quick scoff or a bar with a view you can’t go wrong.
